System types: AC or DC-coupled

The system is powered by alternating AC and direct DC power sources.


AC-coupled sources are typically solar inverters and backup generators.

DC-coupled sources include wind turbines, MPPT solar charge controllers or microhydro technology.


The choice between AC and DC is usually dependent upon the system's dimensions.


Almost every small system is DC-coupled and employs efficient MPPT solar charging controllers.


Larger installations may have AC/DC coupling, depending on the types of inverters or charging devices used and their compatibility with various solar inverters and charge controls (DC).
